What is GEO for websites?

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) focuses on structuring and clarifying your website so your expertise remains understandable, credible, and reference-worthy in AI-driven search and discovery environments.

Unlike traditional SEO, GEO is not about chasing rankings or traffic spikes. It’s about ensuring your expertise can be interpreted accurately when people—and increasingly AI systems—ask questions rather than browse results.

Why this matters now

How expertise is discovered is changing. Search is moving from lists of links to direct answers and summaries.

For independent consultants, this matters because:

  • your site is often evaluated before any conversation

  • clarity is prioritised over cleverness

  • poorly structured content can misrepresent what you actually do

GEO helps ensure your site continues to function as a reliable reference point.

When GEO is useful

GEO is particularly relevant if:

  • your expertise is nuanced or easily oversimplified

  • your site relies on trust rather than volume

  • content has grown organically over time

It’s less relevant for very small, purely promotional sites.

What the process involves

GEO work is always site-specific. It typically includes:

  • a short alignment around focus areas and client questions

  • clarification of key themes and intent

  • structural adjustments to improve readability and interpretation

Some client input is required, but preparation is minimal.

Implementation

You can implement GEO changes yourself.

If handled by me, the work is scoped individually based on your site’s structure and content.
